ADMIN: Red Number Day

Well, Jan mentioned that we were getting close to 500 subscribers, and I
like to get a few over so I know we are stable at a level because we
have occasional dropouts.

As of this morning we are at 502.

A little over 4 years ago (Feb '96) Tom T Little, with some help from
Mike Lowe and others, started iris-l personally funding the list on
another type of list server. When the ISP suffered a catastrophic
failure in June '98 and the list was dead for about a month the
membership was a little over 400 as I remember.

For a while I played manual message forwarder for the list,
redistributing mail to about 370 addresses. Then I found OneList (our
original list provider - now eGroups) and started iris-talk as a
temporary measure until the problems with the other listserver could be
worked out. Tom eventually decided that they were not living up to their
committments and also decided that he needed a break from being list
master and iris-talk became the replacement list for iris-l. The
official start date for iris-talk is 1 July 1998.

All of the credit for starting this wonderful group of diverse
individuals goes to Tom. I just happened to stumble across it a few days
after it started, and most of my knowledge about irises has come from
questions posed to the list and by novice and experienced irisarians the
answers supplied by others in those same categories.

There are lots of times I wish Tom were still running the list. I find I
have a lot less time to post than I would like. For a long time I feared
we would never become as dynamic as iris-l nor reach the same
subscribers level. It seemed to take forever to get to 400 and then in
what seems like a blink, here we are at 500. I have also learned that
the list changes, sometimes with the seasons and sometimes just
evolving. I think that is good as long as what we continue to do is
moving irises forward in other peoples lives.

Thanks Tom, and thanks to all of you that make this list so much of what
it is.
