Dennis: A friend in Colorado gave me some i. missouriensis seed, no directions along with it. However, it grows wild on the slopes of the Rockies and, I've been told, the Cascades, and the general rules for its culture are "wet springs, dry summers." I kept the seed for several weeks in the refrigerator, then planted some in a pot under lights in the basement, other seeds in a pot I just stuck outside under a tree. The seed in the house germinated a few plants, the seed in the pot (which I covered with mulch but didn't bury) was left outside over winter and in the spring must have germinated almost every seed. Because I didn't get around to doing anything with it, I buried both containers in the garden (up to the edge) and just kept them watered all summer, left them in the ground (mulched) over another winter. This spring I finally separated them, planted several in well-drained soil where they get sun about half the day, some of them in the morning, some in the after!
noon. All are doing well so far, after probably 6 weeks in the ground. What will happen now is anybody's guess, especially since I have to be gone the first 3 weeks of July in a summer predicted to be dry. But that is supposedly what they want. I don't know if I did right things, but maybe you can glean from my experience. At least so far it seems to have been what they like.
