Randy, they are: repeat, sporadic, cycle, and ever blooming.
Repeat bloomers bloom in the spring with others and again at the end or soon
after regular bloom season. (Late bloom only doesn't count)
Sporadic rebloomers throw occasional, but undependable, rebloom. In my
region, most of the California rebloomers (for lack of a better identifying
term) qualify as sporadic. Irises like VICTORIA FALLS & BEVERLY SILLS make
up this class. Many others. (However; VF does real well in the rebloom
category here in KY)
Cycle rebloomers make up the largest portion of the rebloomers. These have a
distinct season of rebloom in the fall, starting whenever their individual
conditions of temperature, light hours, and moisture are met. (Not getting
into this one ;-] !) I've been out of the loop for about 5 years and cannot
speak for recent introductions, sorry Mike and others, but things like
Lloyd's SUGAR BLUES, EARL OF ESSEX, CLARENCE & HARVEST OF MEMORIES are in
this class. BLAZING SUNRISE by Paul Black and Dr. Raymond Smith's LEMON
REFLECTION & SUMMER OLYMPICS qualify. SUMMER OLYMPICS puts on quite a
display when happy, but tends to be an all or nothing iris. If it blooms
well in the fall, it blooms more sparsely in the spring. Still, it's more
than worth it,a large and happy clump in fall bloom is quite a sight. Most
of Walter's rebloomers fit in this category (in my area).
Everbloomers are a limited class in my area. These bloom from frost to
freeze, throwing up stalks all summer and fall. IMMORTALITY, FEEDBACK, &
VIOLET RETURNS are the only ones in my area that really fill this
description. CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE comes close because it can, and will, throw
stalks in the summer, but not a lot.
That's the best I can do for now. I realize my research is out of date.
Anyone with newer varieties to contribute, please feel free to chime in.
