When I first began to hybridize, i put the year number first, such as
50-10-A. This meant the year was l950, the cross was #10 of that year, and
A represented the first seedling from the cross. I found that the decade
numbers could be confusing, e.g. 50-3-A, the impression is strong that it
was in l953. I changed to alphabet letters for the year, and have used this
ever since. Having gone through the alphabet, I started again at GG instead
of AA. Now I am nearing the end of the alphabet again. This year's seeds
will be numbered WW. If my some chance, I am still at it four years hence
it will be AAA !
My numbering now shows me which seedling in the cross is meant, e.g.
00 33-4-1, 33 being the 33rd cross of the year, 4 the little row in the
seedling planting, and 3 the third plant, counting left to right. Lloyd
