Hi All,
I just wanted to thank everyone for their input about our problem with the voles. Since it appeared that they hadn't bothered the iris too much, only 4 that appeared the roots were munched on and a little damage in the vegetable garden, we decided not to use any rodenticides for right now. We have three dogs and didn't want to take a chance that any of them would ingest the rat poison.
I phoned the County Extension Service and spoke to one of their Master Gardeners. He was very nice and brought a brochure to the house himself and looked over the problem. We discovered that a lot of the voles were actually living in our "burn piles" (tree limbs, leaves, etc. from various storms). We are still allowed to burn this material in the part of town where we live. We, along with 3 of our neighbors, decided to burn the material in our yards and get rid of their current home and what appeared to be the places where they were having their babies. Heartless, maybe?! But it did cut down on the amount of voles significantly in a matter of hours. The few that are left, we have set traps out for. We have trapped a number in the past week or so and it looks like we are getting a handle on the problem. They just seem to love peanut butter.
I also want to thank Don & Ginny Spoon for their article on "Iris Borer, Verbena Bud Moths, Voles, and Soft Rot" that appeared in the April 2000 AIS Bulletin. It was also extremely helpful. Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions.
