Maybe it is a microclimate?
I am the daughter who lived in Greene which is in the RI uplands near the CT
border. I too mulched with pine needles. I did this because we had a pine
forest behind the house, and I observed that nothing grew under the pine
trees. So we gathered needles and spread them on the garden so I wouldn't
have to weed. Worked pretty well too. Mostly interested in less work. It
was a pretty cold climate there, with sandy soil. Last frost around or after
Memorial Day, and sometimes we had snow in mid October.
