Richard...
I had a similar problem last year. I also live in a area that our
average rainfall is about 10-12 inches/year. My irises got soft rot
and it was spreading rapidly. I checked with a local grower and he
suggested I scrap out the rot and apply liquid comet cleanser. Even
dig out the entire plant cut out the rot then soak it in a bleach
solution, let it dry and replant. I even poured the bleach solution
in the ground where the plant came out of. Nothing was working!!!
Then I read in the AIS bulletin about someone who had this problem
and found a cure. So I tried it and it worked. The rot I had in my
garden had was two-folded. I had lots of 'red ants' trailing around
that spread the rot from plant to plant. I declaried war and went to
work. I first treated the ants then went for the rot. The product
is called..'Agri-mycin 17'. I couldn't find it at any local
nursery. I went to a Farm supply store and they sell it to the peach
and almond farmers. It comes in powder form. I have a sprayer that
hold 3 or 4 gallons that I strap to my back and I sprayed the devil
out of them. I have 13 40ft rows with about 275 Irises. Within just
a couple days I could see it working. The sick leaves dried up and
the entire plant looked healthy again. You have to apply it after a
rain, and when it'll stay dry for a few days. But getting rid of the
ants was very important. I sprayed only one more time this spring
after the rains ended and sprinkle ant poision every four months or
so. So far this year I have had no problems.
Hope this helps...good luck.
