OT-SALE:Memphis Area Iris Society

	I just returned from one of  the most effeciently conducted iris 
rhizome sales I have ever attended.

	Perhaps you know that in 2002, the MAIS is hosting the AIS 
Convention and that a master planting for that convention is at the 
Memphis Botanic Garden.  The current iris planting was dug and 
the rhizomes offered for sale today in order to make way for the 
new guest irises that will start arriving in August.

	The sale rhizomes were placed in brown grocery bags, 
arranged alphabetically by cultivar name with a color photo or a 
color catalog picture clipped to the bag. (Later, I saw the extensive 
collection of pictures and clerks returning pictures to the file when 
the rhizomes of a given variety were sold out).

	Five or six MAIS members were working the floor, and as soon 
as a bag was emptied, it was removed, and the other bags shifted 
closer to the beginning of the row.

	Customers were given a brown bag for their selections.

	At the check-out area, there were three or four members 
totaling the charges and stapling a receipt to the bag.

	The next step was paying out at one of the two cashiers.

	When, you think about it, this sounds so easy and simple, but 
I have never been to a sale that was handled quite like this.

	One of the nicest aspects of this show involved clean-up.  
There was very little.  If there was any dirt, it was in the sacks and 
not on the floor or tables.

	I donated a few things from my garden, and they were all
just about taken before I could get them in a bag and on the proper 
tables.  The citizens of Memphis were iris hungry today!  Include 
me in that group, too.
