And it is important to remember that the genus Iris is diverse and so are the
germination requirements of its species and the hybrids derived therefrom.
Some iris seeds need a chill to germinate, some do not. Some need a long
chill, some a short chill. Some need light on the seeds, some do not. Some
may need a chill if the seed is not fresh, but not if it is, and some need
oscillating temperatures. Some need fruity seed coverings removed, some need
a good soaking.
While there may be different means to accomplish germination in the same kind
of seed, not all kinds of seeds will respond to the same means of
accomplishing germination.
It is important therefore when offering information about germinating iris
seeds to specify what sorts of iris seeds are being discussed.
This is a complex subject, and we have had many interesting discussions of
it. For anyone interested in germinating iris seeds, a trip to the Archives
would be very helpful.
