Same situation here James. People want something that looks neat and tidy
and requires little to no maintenance. These are usually people who are too
busy to garden, or have no desire to do so. They rarely know anything about
plants. (How well I remember the fad on pampas grass, and a major problem
still exists in some areas where there are acres and acres of the stuff
growing wild.)
The climate requires drought tolerant plants. The landscapers plant natives.
They design nice neat beds, edged with railway sleepers, or neat little
stone walls, heap on the bark mulch, charge a heap for the construction
work, and plant them with bulk, cheap plants.
I spend my money on plants and do my own digging and hauling. I fail to see
why anyone interested in gardening would use a landscaper to spoil all their
fun.
At present I am digging up my irises, and potting them for their shift.
Daylilies come next (they are looking worried), then bulbs, when I know what
is where in Spring, and divisions and cuttings of all my favourite
perennials.
The perennials are helping out by filling all the gaps where the irises
were, and in some areas I am planting (you guessed it) bulk, cheap native
plants, and mulching them with tan bark. Heaven help my husband now, if he
decides to stay here instead of shifting!
Cheers, Jan in Aus
