Paul, I don't think it is sterile -- Gerry Snyder  has indicated the WHY it 
is grown -- not the leaves, not the flower, but the seed pods which are used 
by florists in arrangements. Biology is  is not my "thing" but can anything 
be sterile and  yet have seedpods?  And this variety is well known for its 
seedpods.  (my husband would be-- and  my daughter will be - embarrassed by 
my ignorance on this subject!  Rosalie nr Baltimore,USA  zone 7
