Thank you to everybody for trying on Sutter's Gold. Although the 'Junkyard Dog' pictured on iris-photos doesn't look as I remember it, it's probably been all of 30 years since I was home at the right time to see it. I remember it as being prettier, more a uniform gold, with just slight brown shading on falls, and some branching. Of course everything is more impressive when you're young. It was definitely tough, though. It survived about 50 years of total neglect in the border, bloomed every year, and only succumbed after 43 head of beef cattle came frolicking through the yard last fall. Even now, I don't necessarily count it out. If it reappears, I will save some of it for HIPS.
I'll give Mom a new gold iris and tend it when I'm there. Thanks again!
