zone 3b northern MN - clay soil
Laurie,
I impirted soil to make raised beds and got many different kinds of screened
loam. The first kind was perfect, which gives me faith. One kind turned out
to be sandy mixed with manure. It looked great when it first came. The iris
rotted and now all i have is sandy gravel soil. Another type was compost that
was light and airy with out body. Those iris dried out, heaved etc. The
third type was fine looking but very clayish when wet. Those iris there had
lots of rot. So I mixed the compost with the clay and got a better mixture.
Also I used super phosphate last fall and my bloom really improved. So I
think your clayish soil is causing you problems. My problems are compounded
with the iris borer. But this year Jesses Song has been out for about three
weeks and is just magnificent. And Larry Gaulter , Berry Sherbet and Blenheim
Royal are outstanding.
Thank you Suttons.
