I'm one of those digest listers, and I must say wrath from John is NOT
something I have noticed on those occasions when I have, in my enthusiasm to
send a post, forgotten that the subject tag reads "Digest ......"
I always feel silly having forgotten, because, as you say, I have taken the
time to write all that stuff. What a pity it isn't going to be searchable in
the archives.
It's such a simple thing to do, like correcting spelling. I like to think
that people re-read their letters at least once before they send them. This
stuff stays public for a long time! The people who complain are quite cleary
not illiterate people.
I do feel sympathy for the person who hadn't had a chance to read the intro
mail before they posted. I had been reading iris-talk for quite some time
before I joined - just to see what type of people they were, so I knew the
ropes, and already felt at home when I joined. The archives at yahoo groups
and at Mallorn are both public but I guess people don't always pick up on
that before they join up.
The main advantage of the subject tags in using the searchable archives at
Mallorn which provide a wealth of information to those who care to read
them. Correct SUBJECT TAGS are what make this archive so workable.
Another advantage is for those people too busy to read everything. A correct
SUBJECT allows you to read or delete. There are several hundred people on
this list, mostly lurkers who are either set to no mail, delete iris talk
every day, or read what they want and then delete it. Correct SUBJECTS allow
them to do this with ease.
Cheers, Jan in Australia, waiting for Spring, and enjoying a wet reprise
(not one of Walters Irises!) from developing her new garden.
