Re: HYB: pods

I received an offlist question about pod size.

<Some of the big ones are turning out as balloons?...[others experience]
that is often true. ..... The very few balloons I've had haven't been
larger, just looked like the rest but deflated before the rest got
ripe.>

It's as if the pod growth is taking place instead of seed growth. I
don't know for sure they are empty - the ribs of the pod are inflating
while between the ribs looks sunken & there is room to 'squish' the
pod. Other pods are smaller both in diameter and length and are
harder. In cross section, the 'normal' pods would look almost round,
while the others would look scalloped.

<.....other folks' pods, they are nearly ALWAYS bigger than
mine. If I manage one that exceeds 2", it's enormous compared to most.
Normal for me is 3/4" to 1 1 3/4".>

This really varies for me among cultivars. Pods of LIGHTNING RIDGE are
nearly 3 inches long, fairly uniform, maybe half an inch in diameter -
long and skinny. Pods on several other cultivars are mostly in the 1.5
to 2 inch size. HARVEST OF MEMORIES pods (which I have the most of on
several stalks and several clumps so can compare) vary from stalk to
stalk & clump to clump. The biggest are in shade & get runoff from the
barn roof - pods there are as long as the LR pods, but fatter in
proportion. One pod on a stalk on another clump is about 3/4 inch long.

<Seed counts vary tremendously, though. I've had them packed in and got
50+ seeds out of the little things. The same size pod in other cases
may yield only 1-5 seeds.>

I haven't had enough pods to make generalizations, but I've also had
that happen.

<I think food may be a difference, but I'm not sure..... I wonder if
water makes a lot of difference too...>

My suspicion is that regular supply of moisture may be more of a factor,
but of course the two work together.

<.... if the larger ...size means healthier and more seeds. ......if
something might increase seed numbers I'd like to know about it.>

Maybe somebody else can help with this question - I am too much of a
beginner to know.
