RE: RE:ADMIN - subject tags

Just a few remarks regarding the subject tags and list guidelines.

First, our welcome message contained this item:
*** 2) Matters for the List Owner. If someone posts something you think is
inappropriate, or if you want to make a comment regarding problems with the
list culture or the list policies, you are encouraged to refer the matter to
the list moderator, off-list (at jijones@usjoneses.com), rather than posting
to the list about it.***
This is the year 2002, not an era of the wild west. You do not need to round
up a posse and go after someone. Just write a simple and direct message to
the List Owner.

Second a gentle reminder that everyone received the list of subject tags in
their welcome message to the list. At that point, if they make you feel
uncomfotable, then for your own peace of mind, you should decide whether or
not you can accept them. If not, move on. Ranting opinions after the fact
are an unfair burden on the rest of us.

The subject tag list is fairly lengthy, but John also included these
comments:
***Here is the list of subject tags, which I encourage everyone to use to
preface the subject lines of their messages to iris-talk. .... If nothing
fits, don't worry. Pick the best you can.***
That doesn't sound like an obsession to me.

My emailing habit has turned me into an information junkie and iris-talk is
only one of many lists that hit my mailbox daily. At this stage of my
irisitis, I do not need info regarding spuria irises, Pacific coast native
irises nor iris species. When these topics pick up traffic, the subject tags
help me out.

We are humans here. We will not always use the correct subject lines, but
from the beginning we are told *** I encourage everyone to use ... ***.

This list has grown to serve hundreds of readers and someone is always going
to be disgruntled. So here is my last gentle reminder: this is a free
country and anyone who feels they can build a better moustrap is free to do
so. If this list encumbers or restricts you, start your own! Announce it
here one time and forever return us to peace.

My personal opinion is that is list is run very well and continues to look
to improve itself (witness the recent discussion on moving away from Yahoo).
Whew! Aren't you glad those were just a **few** remarks!

Peace to all,
Arvilla Jennings
