If you select any month at the Mallorn archives, and sort by subject, you
can then read for example, everything written about hybridising for that
month. That is, everything written about hybridising by those who have used
the correct subject tags.
That is how the 'search by subject' works. I have used this a lot myself.
Perhaps there is only limited use of this facility? Perhaps a poll to find
out how many people know about and use it?
As a co-moderator of a list which has changed ownership a couple of times,
but still runs smoothly, without much intervention by the owner or the 3
moderators, I will detail my understanding of how the yahoo lists work:
The list owner sets up the list in the first place, and sets the rules by
which the list will operate. If people like the subject involved, they join
the list, and join the discussion, or, if they choose, just listen in. There
can only be one owner.
Both the owner and the moderators can remove people from the list at any
stage if they cause offence. I have done this a lot lately with spammers,
but have never had to remove a genuine member despite a few flamings, and
misunderstandings. Perhaps because it is only a small list.
If people don't like the list, they are free to leave. If they don't like
the rules they are free to start their own list, as list owner, and hope
that they get sufficient following to have decent discussions on that topic.
If I remember correctly, there have been a couple of bearded iris lists set
up by people who didn't like the rules here. Perhaps it would be better to
regroup into 2 bodies, and those who want to join both groups can.
I certainly am very much against the idea of a committee to run iris talk. I
think John has done a fantastic job from the start, and most of this through
very low key involvement. It seems to me that a committee would be far more
controlling, and invasive than the current situation.
Of course if John has had enough I am sure there are people who would love
to take over as list owner. Iris Moose perhaps? :-)
Cheers, Jan
