RE: Re: HYB: dried up pod stalks/real tags

Bill,
I am amazed...10,000 crosses!! It makes my back ache to think about
bending over that many times. We were/are proud of our 120 attempts! I
can't imagine 90 times that many!!! Wow!!

It appears to be about 40# paper. I use a Sharpie industrial marker (fat
type). The ultra fine line sharpie will sometimes fade. Permanent ball point
and graphite pencil will also work pretty well. I've not experienced
significant deterioration of the tags from weather or overhead watering. The
tags have a finished side (slick) and an unfinished side. It is best to
write
on the unfinished side if you can discipline yourself to do so. Snails
sometimes eat the slick finish along with the cross/pollen info. In a slow
year I still use 4 or 5 thousand of these tags on both daylilies and irises
combined. In some years I used over 10,000.

I like the concept of permenent/reuseable tags. For me however, they are not
a very practical solution. I rarely, but sometimes, record a lot of info on
the tag other than the pollen parent. Remember too, I'm lazy, and would
become somewhat frustrated makin' all the tags I would need.
