This is the first year I've had any first year seedlings bloom - one
deformed stunted stalk on an IMMORTALITY child, none on about 2 dozen
others the same age, various ancestry. But I haven't given up yet on
pushing them to grow more/faster.
<...any rot in lined out seedlings by watering heavily? >
This question was to Walter I think, but I'll chime in. This is one of
my many treatments to eliminate the rot prone. I move them from their
germination pots/flats into a bigger window box with sand/potting
soil/alfalfa, add fertilizer and water heavily (either with rain or
garden hose), keeping them moist in partial shade. They drop like flies
in some crosses, some are not affected at all. I would much rather they
die at this stage than after carrying them along to bloom size only to
lose them later.
I don't like to try to set them out in full sun in their permanent
location until they have enough of a rhizome & root system to tolerate
some drought. I haven't figured out a good way to keep the soil around
the roots constantly moist once we hit late May heat and drought.
<Do they continue to gain height/growth through the hot months?>
Mine do in the partial shade. I will set them out in the garden during
the hottest time of the summer and put piles of leafy twigs on them for
shade once they are big enough. It worked last year - seedlings kept
actively growing all summer, but still didn't bloom in spring. It may
have been the weather this spring, just like it will be every spring :-(
