Re: OT-CHAT: post written in anger

I know this isn't an Iris-Talk subject, but allow me this short comment.
. . Thanks!

I have read with interest and compassion Donald's letter (and all that
followed) about the problem of dumped dogs in the rural areas.
If his local animal shelter refuses to take these dumped animals, the
laws need to be changed, as we did for the areas surrounding Fayetteville,
AR. Each county contributed so much to the Fayetteville Animal Shelter for
each animal picked up and brought in. Prior to this agreement, Fayetteville
refused these animals also but it was becoming such a problem that something
had to be done so this monetary ruling was put into effect.
I have had goats and sheep pulled down by dog packs. It might surprise
some to know that in that pack were poodles and other small breeds and while
these smaller dogs did little damage, they were pack members. I have had my
secure rabbit barn dug under and had rabbits terrorized and killed. I have
had 10-15 laying hens killed for the sport of killing. . .Killing these
marauding, destructive animals wasn't difficult. . .
We all know where the responsibility falls. . .directly on the doorstep
of the "pet" owners who do not have these animals spayed and neutered. The
bitches come in heat and in my area, frequently joined up with a coyote
pack. The offspring were called "coy-dogs" and were far more aggressive than
the coyotes. They are brazen and unafraid. One bitch and her 4 pups came
right into my yard and grabbed one of my young male (neutered) Shelties!
Only the handy 22 and a well placed shot saved my pet.
Wild dogs, pets gone feral, were shot. Feral cats were trapped and shot.
My sweet cat, Algernon, (neutered) was attacked several times by these feral
cats resulting in pain and injury and infections to him, very expensive vet
bills for me plus the daily flushing of drains in his wounds until healed.
I understand the difficulty one has in shooting such animals - I have
suffered through this myself. But shooting the owners can sure get you in
trouble!
Having worked in an Animal Shelter, I would like to see each dog/cat
owner found guilty of not spaying/neutering their animal and allowing them
to run loose and breed ordered by law to work in the shelter for 10 days.
This time would increase to 30 days for those caught dumping animals. I
would see that they had to unload the scared, sick and pregnant dogs as they
come in, to see the flea ridden, filthy, matted, worm infested animals, the
injured and starving animals and to hold them while they are euthanized. To
carry their bodies to the freezer and then carry them out later, frozen, to
be loaded for the weekly trip to the crematorium.
I know I'm preaching to the choir, as the saying goes. . . . . thanks
for your patience. . .I'll stick to Iris in the future.
