Donna -
Our weather should be very similar but not so sure about the soil. I have heavy red clay, hence the raised beds. I had truckloads of soil brought in for the beds that had been dredged out of Lake Lanier, where the Chestatee river runs into it. It's beautiful brown top soil. The plants seem to love it.
As for the spotting, it's fungal. I spray them with vinegar and water for aphids and that's about it. I raise caterpillars so I don't use anything toxic at all. The spots come up every year when the weather starts to get hot and the humidity goes up. I have found that, when it gets really bad, if I go in and cut the fans down, it helps. The new growth comes in nice and green and with almost no spots. I can do this at any time of the season, too. Bloom stalks or not.
And I highly recommend Thornbird. I can't speak for anyone else but that thing grows like a weed here. The color is amazing and I just love it. But I'm a huge fan of the odd irises. The Kasparek babies are some of my favorites, but a few of them tend to be picky here. I just plant the ones I like and if they live, then I'm happy. If not, I try again.
Thanks for looking at my pictures!
