Dad says guinea fowl are much harder for predators to catch than chickens, and eat just as many grasshoppers. That has nothing to do with keeping them out of the garage though. There used to be an environmentalist craze for something called a "chicken tractor". Basically a chicken wire coop on wheels that could be moved up the row. Probably one of those things that works better in theory than in practice. Also, if they get hungry enough or want variety, they might start in on your seedlings themselves.
I have about every problem but this one... my cats eat grasshoppers.
