Hi Arnold -
I use a pitchfork (short one) for digging up my iris - it leaves more of the dirt in the ground, yet with a little wiggling back and forth, loosens and removes the clump (or part of it).
Also, regarding the tallest iris I've grown - one year a MOTHER EARTH bloomstalk measured 52" in September! I have pics (which include a 48" 'yardstick' ) to prove it.;-)
