One of my gardening mentors from years back used to use a shovel only when
she had to dig a hole or move dirt.
She used a digging fork throughout most her garden. She lived in Black
Canyon City, AZ.
They worked great for digging up potatoes, of which she grew a lot. They
worked on irises too. I wouldn't say it is the best thing for two or more
year clumps, or for medians, but she used it.
Never felt it was the right tool for everyone, but to someone who is
accustomed to it since she grew up on a little farm in Arkansas, it worked
great!
