Walter's comment on the Drying thread reminded me of a planting aid I've
discovered.
For a variety of reasons, I'm not always able to get everything planted at
the correct time. I'm talking about those delicate seedlings that will just turn
white and probably die, if planted now! (75 to 80 degrees and no cloud
cover).
Styrofoam coffee cups are the same size as the hole made with a bulb setter.
Seedlings planted in these cups can be popped into a hole made by a bulb
setter and never know they've been moved. Planting each seedling into a cup is
rather time consuming, but can be done in the shade (!) just about any time you
can be outside. Allow 2-4 weeks for the soil to firm around the roots. A few
seedlings planted in this manner were also able to withstand the past winter
with only marginal losses.
Betty W from South-central KY zone 6--currently wishing all those seedlings
planted into mum pots last summer were in the cups instead! Much easier to
plant.
