Dana and anybody else who wants to know, I'm not ignoring the question
about how spring germination compared to germination with all the fall
experiments, I just can't remember where I put the data.
Spring germination here has been none to less than 5% the first year
with planting outdoors the 'usual' way, with an occasional cross.
Pallida crosses have usually been more cooperative. Usually a lot
higher germination the second spring, at least with some crosses.
Back in the winter (?), I posted the results of the toilet tank
soak/burrito in the fridge/ germinate/put in the coldframe for the
winter experiments. As I recall, germination was around 20 to 30% for
those refrigerated for 3 months, less for those only refrigerated for 2
months. That should be in the Mallorn archives somewhere.
The other batch of seeds went in the fridge at the 'normal' time to
plant outdoors, were chilled for 3 months, then planted outdoors about
the time they would have germinated if they had been planted outdoors in
the fall.
If/when I find my notes, I'll post the percentage, but I do know it was
less than the fall germinated seeds for the crosses that germinated at
all. Seeds in the pots in the cold frame continued to germinate
throughout the winter during each warm spell after further chilling.
