Re: HIST: query

Dave, I was thinking of responding to your query about LADY EMMA, but intended
to stop by the plant, pull off an outside leaf and look to see if there was
any hint of color other than green, but didn't get to it.

I myself wouldn't consider any cv PBF unless the pigment were present strongly
enough to be noticed by casual inspection from standing position. That's just
my opinion. There's no official boundary line between what is PBF and what
isn't. So far it is a matter of our individual interpretations.

As to faint tinting being present in a variety---reminds me of those
precursors to laced iris. If you looked closely you would see bumps and
oddities on the petal edges. Similarly with SA's--those early ones that gave
rise to the first SA's had a bit of oddness about the end of the beard, as if
the beard were about to lift off the fall, with a piece of tissue under the
tip of the beard that had almost a miniature "crest" look to it. I suppose
"almost PBF's" could have the kind of coloring you describe.

I've grown a lot of historics over the years--a lot of them when they weren't
so historic, and have a few of my own that have passed into the
"historic"--but missing--realm. Roger Nelson wrote me a few years ago about
locating some of them. I have no idea who may have them still--if anyone
does. In any event, my ears perk up when some of my old favorites of many
years ago get mentioned, especially those I remember vividly and with warmth.
I'd enjoy threads on the subject.
