Depending on species, anywhere from 2 to 4 days away from opening. Bearded
are usually 2 days.
This is the only time of year I let my nails grow.... I pinch through the
base of the bud where the standards and falls connect to the bloom and
gently (sometimes not so gently) pry the ends out to release the petals.
When all three sides are done, I grab the tip and pop the whole thing off as
one package. If I've done it right, the anthers come away too. :-)
