CULT: Variegated foliage

What's the experience out there with variegated foliage iris?  I had a
bearded variety called ZEBRA some years ago but it eventually died off.  I
know several folks have been trying to improve flowers, but what about
hardiness?  I include any variegated foliage iris in my question,e.g. I.
pseudocorus.  I'd like some for the contrast in foliage mostly.
