In addition to the four generally different distributions of yellow pigments
in iris mentioned in "HYB: ?bicolor/amoena...." there is another. This may be
distinct from any of the above mentioned four, or be a variation on one of
them.
There are many cv's which have a rich flush of yellow on the hafts, often also
having a rich flush of yellow in the base of the standards. An illustration
of this with anthocyanin pigments present is the seedling numbered "R
60-violet." A strongly developed reddish or rosy blush on the otherwise
blue-violet flower flows across the hafts and down the sides of the fall a
short way.
The pollen parent of that seedling, P 1-9 from Swingtown X Romantic Evening,
has the flush of color in both fall and standard, giving a coppery tone to the
heart of the red-violet seedling due to this yellow pattern.
One of those Bill Burleson uses in his illustrated commentary on my first post
about the Umbrata question shows the pattern strongly.
This may be a variation on the yellow-band pattern which seems to vary over
quite a range. A fairly complex genetic study would be required to sort out
all these pattern inheritances, relationships and distinctions.
I do not believe the genetics involved are connected to the Umbrata pattern.
The yellow band type, and the center-flush type described above often appear
in crosses from pink or yellow selfs, or those with minimal flashes of white
below the beard, especially in wide outcrosses to blues or whites.
