Interesting lead in for a thread, Betty.
Although not a named variety, I have a 'Fogbound' seedling that is like
Tupperware. It has everything--except acceptable color, rather unusual for a
'Fogbound' seedling. It's so ugly I'm keeping it, and, for that matter,
trying to use it as a parent, thinking color is rather easy to retrieve.
Substance, branching, form and so on are not.
Another aspect of the genetics involved, hopefully, is borer resistance.
'Honky Tonk Blues' and its offspring, 'Fogbound' being a grandchild, have
often been noted and mentioned as rarely if ever showing borer damage.
So for breeding substance, as well as a lot of other desirable qualities I
would say the "Number One Breeder" for substance would either be 'Fogbound' or
any one of several from its growing family of quality offspring.
