Just to make sure the archives have the entire muddled story - according
to Tompkins 1994 catalog, the year it was registered & introduced, BLACK
ANDROMEDA is described the same as in the 1995 catalog, with this added:
"A taller, larger version of its parents, This is a real knockout"
Which makes it sound like it does have the 'umbrata' pattern, with rim
on the falls to match the standards. Supposed parents SWEETER THAN WINE
and ARMAGEDDON look nothing like "BLACK ANDROMEDA".
My guess is that Tompkins was thinking about a different seedling when
he wrote the description, never bothered to change the registration, but
gradually got closer to describing the bloom correctly in later
catalogs.
