Re: HYB: Best of the best

Kathy:

I'm an iris grower that rarely writes to this web site, but your question is
a good one.

I've changed my whole outlook about growing iris after attending a judges
training session offered by Barry Blyth, the Australian hybridizer. Barry's
philosophy is this; "What's the first thing you notice when you visit an
iris garden?" The answer is color. When judging a bench show you cannot
favor one color over another, but in the garden it's important.

I'm starting to concentrate on great irises that are recent introductions; I
now have 70 that were introduced from 2000 thru 2004. I do have Barry's
Decadence, Joe Ghio's Expose, and other that are omebia's or bicolors.

Most of the people writing to this website are fascinated with the older
classic irises. Not me. My suggestion is to look at the latest catalogs
from hybridizers and don't be afraid to pay $50 or thereabouts for recent
introductions.
