Re: OT: Introduction

Molly -- Used mushroom soil is a very good additive to your soil -- Provides plenty of nutrients and virtually no weed seeds. Use only as an additive, however; don't use it as a substitute for topsoil. -- Griff

Hi Kent and Anner,

I live in Cannandaigua, NY in the Fingerlakes Region (wine country). We seem to be zone 4 here. I just moved here last year after living for 20 years in the Catskills (zone3). Compared to that this area seems downright mild!
Up to now I've just grown irises. I also grow most any kind of plant that's out there for indoors or out including orchids. Because I'm starting a new garden here I decided that I wanted to expand my knowledge on Iris and acquire some named varieties. Not an easy thing to do on a local level as I've found a lot of mis-identified plants in the nurseries. I recently bought one that reminded me of an iris I had (past tense) named Fire King. It's a solid coppery red color. The label said it would be a pink bicolor!
Anyway figured I'd get an education before I invested more money in them. If anyone knows of a good nursery (for Iris) out my way please let me know. I've been able to find specialist for Daylilies but not Iris.
One quick question. I found a supplier of mushroom compost at a really good price ($21./yard). Do Iris like stuff this rich or is it too much for them?

Cheers!
Molly D.

Hi Molly, and welcome. I join Anner in wanting to know where you are and what
you do with irises that brings you here. I just grow them myself, and am
quite new to named irises. Hope you'll enjoy the discussions.
