My theory is that, like a lot of other plants, irises are at least a
little bit prone to being self sterile. Self fertile enough that, when
little non flying bugs are crawling around all over the inside of the
flower, pod development is triggered but rarely seed formation.
When I was a kid, we had a dachshund who used to set airpods/false
pregnancies. Without benefit of any "pollen" at all. But dogs and
irises are pretty far apart on the evolutionary tree, so that data point
is <probably> not applicable. <g>
<Probably "first" visits??
Or hysterical pregnancies?
