Weeds - pre-emergent

Hello iris lovers - Many years ago I used Surflan and it lasted a couple of 
years.  It is a liquid and tends to clog up the sprayer.  Sure glad I didn't 
use a pre-emergent this year as it has been the wettest one in many years and I 
am leaving the weeds to soak up some of the water.  Seems to be working but 
the weeds are now higher than the iris.  I am going to cut off the seed heads 
and leave them til fall even though every time I walk in my iris beds I grit my 
teeth and my stomach rolls.
