Re: RE: Red-toned rebloomers (was RE: First 08 rebloomers)

Hi Robin,

I am curious - wouldn't Popstar be a big help?

I have used both Popstar and Wearing Rubies heavily in crosses, but am yet to see the results bloom.

Since reliable red rebloomers are a field in which progress has been so slow, I am trying to approach the issue from a number of different angles. It is frustrating that some of the genetic material I would like to use isn't available here in Australia - Lest We Forget is a prime example of that, as not only is it unlikely to be available here any time soon (given spiralling quarantine costs), but neither of its parents (Witch of Endor and Mulberry Echo) are available here either.

I am really hoping that Popstar and Wearing Rubies will help make up for the unavailability of a lot of the US-bred rebloomers, but will just have to wait and see. Certainly their form should be a big help, but I consider reliability of rebloom (particularly in colder climates than mine) a major goal too.

I have one red and one more orchid seedling from Popstar x Renown. Only four from the cross have bloomed and the other 2 were yellow though one had a anthocyanin wash.

Interesting to hear. My Popstar x Renown cross didn't set a pod, but I did get seeds from the reciprocal cross.

Also I used Sheeba's Queen a few years ago with various things and got a lot of reds, and by the second generation I was actually surprised that Sheeba's Queen was so close in there as the form improved greatly over 1 generation.

Sheba's Queen is another one not available here, but yes, I have seen that kind of improvement with some older irises, too. Definitely an avenue worth trying when the iris in question has some of the traits you are looking for.

I do hope that you can get a cross with Rosalie Figge x Golden Immortal. RF has never produced red seedlings, but certainly the red side of Violet. I do think that the common thread that RF, Matrix ans Renown get the red from is Violet Miracle, I got red beards first generation from some VM crosses.

Violet Miracle is a name I have noticed comes up quite frequently when looking up the parentage of rebloomers I am interested in. Doing a check of Violet Miracle in irisregister, some of its other seedlings include Cantina, Constant Companion and Winesap, which definitely confirms your theory, and adds weight to the idea that Rosalie Figge x Golden Immortal could give reds.

Good luck to you- there is much that can be done in the way of red rebloomers!

Thank you - I agree with you there.

Ann
