I'm certining intrigued that 5 weeks of cold was enought for
germination starts.

One more question. Did all  crosses start germination at same time or
did some wait a few more weeks?

Last year I didn't get my seeds planted until late March. They had been
soaked and rinsed.   I did get some germination in  May, but only about
10% of crosses. The rest went into barn fridge for summer. Some in
flats, the rest in baggies with damp peat moss ( the ones I didn't get
planted). Flats started germinating after 3 months, like they always
do. Some in baggies with peat started germinating almost right away
Various ones in baggies germinated through the summer. When these ones
started to  germinate , within several days most of seeds in that
baggie had started roots. None of the ones planted in soil did this.
They all waited their three months. Some germinated in frigde. Those
that didn't sprouted withing days of coming out of fridge, except for
those on top of the stack that dried out somewhat.

Leaves me wondering about variation in stratification needs based on
genetics of seeds.
As stated before, best germination in solid and amoena and bitone.
Worst germination ones invariably seemed to be  plicata crosses.

Chuck I planted the seeds in late March. Middle of the 3rd week?  They
started showing leaves the last week of April, as mine did. There were
9
crosses and not my seeds. Planted them for a friend. He was still
getting
new ones in early June, rare here. Mine quit in the 3 week of May. I
did
water them at least  every day  the first week. Sprouting was normal
for
mine this year.

With several weeks to sprout  how can some one determine the strongest
growers? I see the first ones  are always bigger than later ones. I
plant
mine in small pots or 20oz Styrofoam cups when they get about 1 1/2 "
tall.
I do not see which ones are weak. By the next spring I can. The weakest
ones
either die by then or are small. They are destroyed.

I plant them in a raised beds ( 2 beds) 14' X 50"  80 seedlings per
bed. 10"
X 10" for each seedling. I get 60% to 75% bloom the first year . Photo
