I believe this is a common problem with outdoor planting. The freeze/thaw of
early spring kills the early germinaters.
We only see the seed shells or the mushy seeds. The new root and emerging
leaf are rotted away after the freeze.
Thus the planting of the pot in the ground keeps it from thawing as easily.
Packing mulch or leaves around the pots could have the same results. Any
method that keeps the dirt from thawing intermintly would work.
