Hi Kathy,

I use a format much like Colleens.

<<searchable format. I use
xcel>>

I've added a couple of classes to my breeding program so I've, also, added a
class indicator to the system to keep them separate.

TB2511 is from this year. The TB is 'tall bearded.' The number 25 is the
twenty-fifth year of my breeding program. The number 11 is the eleventh cross
in the permanent record. (The field # was 27.) Once all crosses are finished
for the year, and the takes are determined, I do a sort on the pod parent to
determine the permanent numbers. It puts them in numeric and then alphabetic
order.

TB2511 is 2018-01:(Hello Darkness x Tara's Choice) X Renown)

Excel works for me. I've found it a bit of a challenge to remember to insert
the 0 as place holder, but it's important to the sort feature. This year I've
added a page with a column on the worksheet to indicate expected pattern or
color. I have several pages in each record--field numbers, permanent numbers,
then pages for a pod sort and a pollen sort. My final page is usually an
expanded page where I add in all the parents so I have a good picture of the
cross without constantly flipping between sets of records. (winter work)

I add pages for various functions so I can keep each handy without constantly
sorting. The field # page is left intact and saved, so I always have a full
picture of the season, both success and failure.

As the cross develops, I only number the re-selects. It takes to much time,
product, and energy to number all the seedlings that do not meet my criteria.
I add Re for rebloom when it happens here in my garden.

Everyone does it a little different.

Kathy
We all work out a system that suits ourselves. However a common format
s year, cross, seedling. So the year may be recorded as 99 or a letter.
o for me
253-16 would be the 16th seedling from the 253rd cross I recorded in 2005.
ther people may use numbers for each parent and then use suffixes to
ndicate year and actual seedling.
It's a good idea to record your seedling in a searchable format. I use
xcel with columns for cross number, seedling number, pod parent, pollen
arent, date of cross, number of seeds in cross, plus additional columns
o record notes about each seedling. This way you can sort your columns
s you wish. I find it a helpful way to find out which were successful
arents, etc, or use the find function to locate a particular cross.
ther people seem to use geneology software.
Hope this helps

 Hi,

Is there a standard format for numbering seedlings? Or at least a most
common
 version?

P.S. Was someone able to identify the iris in the forefront on the cover of
the April Bulletin? It is very similar to Heather Marie by Lauer.
