I have noticed a correlation between vigor and ruffling and the energy resources of the plant. I had a cross a few years ago that showed this dramatically. There were only about 20 seedlings in the cross and only about half produced increases by bloom time. The half that had increases were rather tailored when they bloomed. Those without increase produced well ruffled flowers without exception. I have no doubt that the seedlings that had little ruffling had the genes for ruffling, but not the vigor to make increase as well as ruffling. Many of us see this in introductions from the various "iris paradises" which are dramatically ruffled in their home gardens, but for us they bloom with much more modest form. I again attribute this to genes for vigor under various climate conditions. So we are often selecting for vigor when we think we are only selecting for form.
