sometime in the 1990s i was trying to breed for a black and orange iris....ignorantly crossing black by orange and orange by black. got a bunch of deep black seedlings plus some others (all very poorly formed). I don't remember what the parentages were but i think before the storm and jolt were in them.... found another way to get black and orange so have stopped pursuing that avenue..don't know if that helped or not

All Night Long has Hollywood Nights as pod parent. Celtic Fire has Hollywood Nights as pollen parent. So it can work.Black is a combination of blue anthocyanin, Ae anthocyanin enhancement) and either a deep yellow or intense pink or orange. So you can get a lot of good blacks crossing a black to an intense yellow (done that, got blacks) or to an intense orange. I have found pink under black iris, but haven't made any crosses to pink. All the black, or near black with red beards have either orange or pink under them. as attested to by red beard. So as long as you have the three key components together, you will get black.Chuck Chapman -----Original Message----- From: chad schroter <charlesschroter@yahoo.com> To: iris <iris@hort.net> Sent: Mon, Jun 18, 2012 12:05 pm Subject: Re: [iris] iris DIGEST V1 #1460 Steve, I can only offer some negative advice :). All crosses I havetried to All Night Long or Hollywood Nights have not taken; which is a shame since I think they have some of the best flower form. When crossing Blacks(similar to pinks), out crosses to other tones will rarely result in any blacks (or pinks). Midnight Oil was probably the darkest I have grown. It blooms late for me and the flowers tended to burn up in the heat, probablybecause of the color. Make sure whatever cv you try are going to be in syncbloom time wise with your other Iris.
