Blooming seasons

I find it absolutely fascinating that in the same day's Digest (messages from
6/12) there were messages from two people reporting the start of the iris
blooming season.... one in zone 3 and one in zone 7....!! Here in zone 5
they are just finishing up.
I was just discussing this with a friend and we were wondering.... what
exactly is it that triggers these guys to bloom? Day length, air
temperature, soil temperature, amount of sunshine (no, couldn't be that, we
haven't had any here!) or what? Anyone know?
