I don't know if Bravos are called for. Due to the lack of snow cover this
winter, then the very cold spring, what was supposed to be a TB show
essentially turned into a median show. Only problem was, the majority of the
medians were showing cold-related damage. "Modern" TBs were not in evidence.
This left the early-blooming, apparently more weather-reistant old TBs in
the limelight. Not to take anything away from GUDRUN--it was a beautiful
stalk.
All the visible cold damage made me trek out to my garden this AM to see what
might be available for the Southern Tier Iris Society show in Johnson City,
NY on June 14. My poll is quite disheartening. The medians will be pretty
much gone, and the TBs apparently have decided to take the year off. Bloom
stalks are sparse, and most of those that are there are clearly deformed.
NOT a good year for bearded irises in upstate NY.
