I do hope some of our new members are wondering what she meant. To save a trip
through the archives:
: With so many people and a wide variety of growing conditions, I think we have
a

: indicator of hardiness. Not cause & effect -- just whether a PBF plant is
more
: likely to prove cold-hardy than a green one. I'll handle the statistical
: analysis, if enough of you will make the observations in your own gardens.
:
: This is what I'd need for every TB you grow:
:
: Name of variety
: Foliage purple-based (PB) or green (G)
: # of years grown (since last replacement)
:
: No, you don't have to use the PB & G abbreviations unless you find it easier!
: And I don't need the exact number of years you've had it. Something like
"over
: 5" or "at least 20" will suffice. But it's important to cover every named TB
: you have, not just the PBF ones. I'll also need your best guess at the zone
#
: of your garden.
: E-mail or snail-mail your data to me, whichever you find most convenient.
: Then after I've finished the analysis, I'll post the conclusion to the list.
Some have gone the proverbial extra mile and included hybridizer and year of
introduction. While I greatly appreciate that, it isn't required. My "quick
look" assessment shows we still don't have enough data to support even the
simplest analysis (north vs. south; east vs. west; historical vs. modern). So
if any of you did make your observations but just didn't get around to sending
them in, or if you're one of those lucky ones with TBs still blooming --
consider this a reminder....)
If your bloom season is over, though, and you just didn't get around to it --
maybe next year. To control for the seasonal effect, observations need to be
made between the time the iris start their spring growth and the end of bloom
season. Most people have chosen bloom season, which is even better because it
makes it possible to combine the foliage observation with the ritual identity
check.
