I would agree with this whole-heartedly.  With this added thought.  I learned
on the list last year that the bud for next year's bloom forms shortly after
bloom season, so if they were too crowded this year to bloom, leaving them in
that state till or if they shut down for the summer might mean you won't get
any bloom next year either?  How about thinning out the clump now without
digging it up and either resetting what you thin or giving them away or
throwing them away, then fertilizing/ cultivating what's left in the ground
and resetting at  the normal digging & planting time for your area.
