Hi, Amy--the seed pods don't explode, but they do split along the seams
between the three segments after turning brown. Most of the seeds don't
wander too far, so most volunteer seedlings show up very near the parent
(which is why people often think their iris has changed over the years--it's
been supplanted by its children.
Barb, in Santa Fe, with some interesting seed pods swelling in the garden out

OK, bear with me here.... when does one know the pod is ripe and can be
removed from the stalk? For hibiscus it turns brown and will explode;
same for pansies. Is this true for iris?
