Actually, this is nothing new for them. I used to be in the mailing list
business and buy lists from them for several of my customers. They were
very well known for having a very high percentage of "mooch buyers" ie:
people who will buy anything with little or no investigation. First use of
these names commanded a very high price and they were extremely good at
squeezing the maximum possible revenue out of them. They were absolutely
unprincipled about this. The only way to have a hope of using the names
ahead of competitors (in spite of having paid for the privledge) was to use
Fed Ex overnight and get the mail pieces out the same day. I'm glad not to
be dealing with them anymore.
I don't believe that they're in the plant mail order business at all.
It's just a front for what they really do - generate and sell names.
Spring Hill has a similar reputation in the list business. They get
substantial revenue by selling names. The list manager and contact names
were the same for both companies, which is quite interesting. I've been
told they have a common ownership, but I don't know if it's true.
