I understand that there are many frustrations arising out of this
situation. However, I feel I must come to the defense of the AIS Board.

First, remember that the AIS Board members are from all over the country.
It is a voluntary unpaid position. They only meet formally twice per year.
While this does not abdicate their responsibilities, I think it is
unrealistic to expect instant action on this or any other subject. There
was no indication of any problem at the previous Board meeting last fall,
and they took steps to resolve the problem at the spring Board meeting last
week.

Second, this problem did not occur overnight, nor did the Board members
become aware of the extent of the problem immediately. While many people
privately fumed over poor service or complained here on IRIS-L, only a few
complained to members of the AIS Board. Speaking only for my dad (Terry
Aitken, a Board member), earlier in the spring, he was under the impression
that only a few orders were behind, and that Jerry Gifford assured the
Board that he would be able to catch up. About a month ago, I started
forwarding messages to him that were circulating on the IRIS-L, and it was
only then that he realized that the problem had not been resolved, and in
fact had gotten worse. Had I not forwarded some of these messages, he would
have been completely unaware that a problem still existed until the Board
meeting.

So please do not be too hasty to cast blame. At this point, I hope the
Board resists pressure for instant action, and chooses carefully the next
person (or persons) to take over this job. Otherwise, we may simply replace
one problem with another, at great expense to the AIS.

Scott.
