Re:OT-Martha Stewart

I certainly don't hate Martha Stewart, although I think it is interesting
that responses to this conglomerate are often so emotional. It think her
aesthetic sense and "taste" are superb, and her emphasis on appreciating
those things in life which are simple, of good quality, and often made with
one's own hands is admirable. What I don't like about Martha is a certain
lack of moderation which infuses a lot of her projects. It appears to take an
awful lot of impeccably simple, elegantly refined, stuff to keep Martha happy
and she doesn't seem to deny herself much or wait long. I think she, in
effect, ups the ante to the extent that many people feel diminished because
their available time, or resources, or skills are inadequate to achieve what
Martha appears to achieve. I clipped a magazine article on her in the
seventies when she was a lone young caterer with ideas, and it is amazing how
consistent her sensibility and ideas have been over the years. I flip
throught the magazine and occasionally pick one up if there is an article on
something that interests me. The gardening stuff is often interesting. She
does not strike me as a uniquely corrosive force in a society already
saturated with consumerism. She isn't that important.
